  Involved in gas exchange

  The physical process of taking air into and out of the lungs
• Nose

  • Prepares air for entry into the lungs by filtering, warming and moistening it
  • The nasal cavity is lined with mucous membrane what not only traps foreign substances but also moistens the air before the it enters the lungs
  • The cilia that line the nasal cavity also help filter the air
• Pharynx

  • Located at the back of the mouth and nasal cavity
  • Both food and air pass through the pharynx
