the aim of CBT is to treat behavioural or emotional disorders eg. depression
CBT works on the basis of the computer analogy
most people think the input causes their output (anger or depression) whereas the cognitive approach believes its due to faulty processing
the therapy aims to challenge faulty internal mental processes
in the therapy, the client keeps a dysfunctional thought diary to rate their belief in the thought and write a more rational one to then re-rate their original thought
during cognitive reconstructing, the therapist helps challenge current processes and rebuild new ones
empirical disputation - ask the client for evidence for their overly negative thought and when the client cant they see their thoughts arent based on reality
Beck stated that depressed people often have a negative cognitive triad
negative cognitive triad- negative schemas about themselves, the world and the future
pleasant activity scheduling can help clients see the enjoyment in the world and build more positive schemas
