- a population pyramid is a type of graph which shows the percentage, or number, of males and females in each age group
- if the population pyramid is wide at the bottom, it means there is a high proportion of young people in the population
- shorter bars could indicate high death rates in those age groups - maybe war or famine
- the dependency ratio is the proportion of people below and above normal working age
- the dependency ratio is calculated by adding together the numbers for both groups, then dividing by the working population and multiplying by 100
- the lower the dependency ratio, the greater the number of people who work and are less dependent. the higher the number, the greater the number who are dependent on the working population
- low dependency ratios are more common in HICs than NEEs and LICs
- mexico is a LIC which has a large proportion of young people, under 15s make up 28 percent of the population and just over 7 percent are over 65
- in mexico:
- death rate is falling, just 5 deaths per 1000, more babies are being born and people are living longer
- birth rate is 19 per 1000 and falling rapidly
- japan is a HIC with an ageing population which is getting smaller. 27 percent of the population are over 65 and under 15s is 13 percent. the average age is 46
- in japan:
- people are living longer, the death rate is 10 per 1000, average life expectancy is 80 for men and 87 for women, due to a healthy diet
- birth rate is 8 per 1000 and has been falling since 1975

- how to draw a population pyramid:
- draw horizontal and vertical axis, using the same scale either side of x axis
- draw each of the bars
- colour the bars the same colour
- straight sides means low death rate
- a barrel shape means falling birth rate and rising life expectancy
- triangle shape means high death rate and low life expectancy
- sudden indents means higher death rates than normal due to war/ catastrophe
- bulges mean high immigration rate
