  • The President has the power of being 'commander-in-chief' over all armed forces, giving them the power to deploy troops overseas. For example President Biden used this power in commanding the US military to leave Afghanistan in 2021 to end the Afghanistan war.
  • One power of the President is they can totally bypass Congress on certain occasions by issuing "Executive Orders". This can allow the President to make laws without needing Congressional approval. For example in his first 100 days as President, Joe Biden issued over 60 executive orders.
  • Every January the President has the power to speak to Congress in the 'State of the Union' Address. As well as reviewing the previous year, the President outlines spending plans and any proposals for legislation. For example, in his 2020 State of Union address President Trump outlined proposals for new laws to reduce the price of prescription drugs across America.
  • Another power that the President has is appointing thousands of people to help run the country. Roles such as members of the Cabinet, US Supreme Court justices are all appointed by the President. For example, President Biden appointed Antony Blinken as his Secretary of State and Janet Yellen as Secretary of the Treasury.
