Preparation of aromatic amines (reduction of nitrobenzene)

Cards (2)

  • Aromatic amines can be produced through the reduction of nitrobenzene. The reducing agent (tin or iron) will be mixed with concentrated hydrochloric acid and heated under reflux.
  • As the reduction of nitrobenzene occurs, a phenylammonium salt will form. This is then reacted with NaOH to give phenylamine.
