  • The presence of female Anopheles mosquitoes.
  • The presence of the plasmodium, in either the mosquitoes or human population.
  • A warm, humid climate – temperatures between 16°C and 40°C and abundant rainfall.
  • Areas of stagnant water allows mosquitoes to lay their larvae.
  • Vegetation nearby to provide shade for the mosquito to hide during the day and digest the blood meal from the night before.
  • Poor water supply and sanitation creates stagnant water for breeding.
  • People nearby to provide reservoir of blood.
  • People working in the padi fields and near water are at higher risk of being bitten, allowing the disease to spread.
  • Migrants moving into areas and spreading malaria to areas which previously did not have it - looking for work, refugees etc.
  • Airport malaria is when people and mosquitoes carrying the parasite travel to different countries by plane and bring malaria to the area.
  • Poor education and healthcare means people do not know how to prevent malaria, spreading it further.
  • In some developing countries, government can't afford solutions so the people continue to get malaria.
