Specific immune response

Cards (3)

  • Describe the inflammatory response
    • Pathogens damage cells/tissue
    • WBC called mast cells
    • Release histamines
    • Cause vasodilation of arterioles
    • Increasing bloodflow to affected area
    THIS CAUSES REDNESS
    • Histamines also increase permeability of capilleries
    • Allows fluid + WBC to leak into tissue
    CAUSES SWELLING
    • Phagocytes move to site of infection
    • Engulf + digest pathogens in phagocytosis
  • What do interferons do?
    • Inhibits viral protein synthesis
    • So virus cant replicate + spread via cell lysis
  • Describe phagocytosis
    • Phagocytes recognise antigens on pathogens
    • Phagocytes move around pathogens
    • Engulf it in a phagosome
    • Lysosomes have hydrolytic enzymes
    • Lysosome fuse with phagosome
    • Releases enzymes
    • Break down pathogen
