  • The multi-store model of memory is too simple

it suggests STM is a single store, but other research has suggested that it is much more complex and can deal with multiple sensory information at one time, by using separate sections. You can encode sound and smells and feel things at the same time. Spa dayhear the music, smell the oils, and feel the back massage.
  • Neuropsychology has suggested long-term memory is also made up more than one store
different types of memories are stored in different parts of the brain contradicting the MSM of memory. E.g. hippocampus responsible for autobiographical memories and cerebellum procedural.

  • Other psychologists have suggested that thinking about the meaning of what you are trying to remember (semantic processing) is more important in transferring it to long-term memory than simply repeating it

thinking about the meaning allows us to process information more deeply and therefore embeds it more deeply into LTM. Shiffrin realised that semantic processing was important and added it to eh MSM as elaborative rehearsal.
