    • Blood tests

      From the 1930s, blood samples were taken and tested for an enormous number of conditions without the need for invasive diagnosis methods
    • Blood sugar monitoring
      From the 1960s, blood sugar monitors allowed people who suffer from diabetes to check their blood sugar regularly to ensure that they manage their condition

      From the 1890s, x-rays helped to see inside the body without cutting into it. Since the 20th century, they have helped to diagnose problems such as broken bones
    • MRI scans
      From the 1970s, MRIs using magnets and radio waves to create an internal image of the body. They are better suited to diagnosing soft tissue injuries such as ligament damage, than using x-rays
    • CT scans
      From the 1970s CTs were used, they are more advanced than x-rays. They can be used to diagnose tumours and other growths in the body
    • Ultrasound scans
      From the 1940s sound waves were used to build up a picture of the inside of the body. They are helpful for diagnosing things like gall and kidney stones
    • ECGs (Electro Cardiograms)

      From the 1900s electrical impulses were used to track heart activity
    • Endoscopes
      From the 1900s a camera on the end of a thin flexible tube was used to see inside the human body. They are the most commonly used to investigate digestive symptoms, such as vomiting blood. Sometimes they are used to assist in treatments by carrying small surgical instruments into the body
    • Blood pressure monitors

      From the 1880s these were used to help diagnose high and low blood pressure
