  • Lubrication

  • Full-film lubrication
    • Hydrodynamic - two sliding surfaces completely separated by a fluid film
    • Elastohydrodynamic - rolling motion with a thinner film layer and higher pressure
  • Boundary lubrication
    Seen where there are regular start-ups and stop-ups and where shock-loading conditions are present. Oils have high-pressure (EP) or anti-wear (AW) additives to help protect surfaces where full film cannot be achieved
  • Mixed lubrication
    A cross-section between boundary and hydrodynamic lubrication. Most surfaces are separated by a lubricating layer but asperities are still in contact

    A method of workplace organization using 5 Japanese words: Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), Shitsuke (Sustain/Self-discipline)
  • Sort (Seiri)
    • Minimize time loss searching for objects
    • Reduce risk of distraction by unwanted objects
    • Simplify inspection process
    • Increase useful space
    • Improve protection by removing barriers
  • Set in Order (Seiton)

    • Arrange workstations so tools/devices are in close proximity, easy to access and in logical order
    • Place components according to application with commonly used ones closest
    • Arrange products for quick picking
    • Assign fixed positions and use labels/markings to make it easy to return items
  • Shine (Seiso)

    • Improve efficiency and safety of production processes
    • Keep workplace safe and easy to work in
    • Keep workplace clean and enjoyable
    • Anyone unfamiliar can detect problems within 50 feet in 5 seconds
  • Standardize (Seiketsu)

    • Develop protocols and timetables to ensure the first 3 'S' activities continue
  • Sustain/Self-discipline (Shitsuke)

    • Ensure the 5S strategy is followed
