    Look to the group for guidance when situation is ambiguous, person believes the group has more information
  • Normative Social Influence
    The need to be liked, not wanting to stand out, fear of rejection. Leads to compliance publicly, privately may be different

    • Asch's study - participants conformed as they were more concerned about being liked in the group situation
  • Normative Social Influence may reduce when the difference between public and private behaviour can't be sure, especially outside the lab
