• Stalin's armies were in eastern Europe: he insisted this was to prevent future attacks
• America had a new President: Roosevelt died and Harry Truman became President. He was more anticommunist than Roosevelt
• The Allies had tested a nuclear bomb: Truman informed Stalin about this
• Churchill was replaced: 1945 by Attlee
