  • Reproduction is the process that produces new individuals
    There are two types of reproduction
    • aesexual reproduction only involves one parent, offspring produced is genetically identical to the parent
    • sexual reproduction involves two parents, offspring produced are genetically different but similar to the parents
  • Gametes are sex cells involved in reproduction.
    They are haploid cells meaning that they only contain half of the genetic information of diploid cells

    Gametes in animals
    • the female gametes are eggs and are produced in the ovaries
    • the male gametes are sperms and are produced in the testes
    Gametes in plants
    • the female gamete are ovules and are produced in the ovary
    • the male gamete are is pollen and are produced in the anther
  • Anther- organs in the flower that produces pollen grains
    Pollen grains - male gametes produced from anthers of a flower
    Stigma- top of the female part of the flower which collects pollen grains
    Ovary- female organ in a flowering plant
    Ovules- female gametes produced from the ovaries of a flower
    Sepals- protects the unopened flower bud
    Petals- may be brightly coloured to attract insects
    Stamens- the males part of the flower consisting of the anther held up
    Nectary- produce sugary nectar to attract insects
  • Fertilisation is when the nuclei of two haploid gametes fuse together to produce a diploid zygote which divides to form an embryo
