Neuroglia

• Schwann cells (PNS) and oligodendrocytes (CNS) produce myelin sheaths in the surrounding axons
• Multiple sclerosis is a condition where the myelin is lost due to the injury of oligodendrocytes. As a result, the nerve conduction is weak and there is loss of coordination
• Astrocytes are star shaped cells that support neurons by removing waste and helping maintain the environment. They also help form the blood brain barrier. They are the most common type of glia cell found in the CNS
• Microglia are the white blood cells of the brain. They clear away infection or dead cells and protect the brain from disease
