RP 1: Acid-Base Titration

Cards (4)

  • What is a standard solution?
    A solution of known concentration.
  • Why are acid-base indicators used?
To detect when a reaction reaches completion, indicated by a colour change.
  • How do you make a standard solution?
    1. Measure mass of solid
    2. Transfer into a volumetric flask, rinsing the boat with distilled water into the flask so no solid is lost.
    3. Add volume of distilled water to the flask and stir to dissolve the solid.
    4. Add more distilled water up to the line on the volumetric flask and invert multiple times to mix.
  • How do you carry out a titration?
    1. Use volumetric pipette to place one reactant in the conical flask and fill the burette with the other.
    2. Add a few drops of indicator to the conical flask.
    3. Slowly allow burette reactant to drip into the conical flask whilst swirling it.
    4. At end point (colour change) close the tap and record final burette volume.
    5. Repeat until you get concordant results that dont include the rough titre.
    6. Calculate a mean titre.
