rp6: stretching a spring

Cards (4)

  • method:
    1. set up a clamp stand & hang a spring from a clamp
    2. fix a metre rule vertically alongside the spring with another clamp
    3. read bottom of spring on metre rule - unstretched length
    4. hang a 1N weight on the spring
    5. read the new position of the bottom of the spring on the metre rule & record - stretched length
    6. to work out the extension, subtract the length of the unstretched length from each reading
    7. repeat with different weights
  • what happens if u add too many weights?
inelastic deformation - exceeding the limit of proportionality
  • what equation is used to calculate the spring constant?
spring constant = force / extension
  • risk assessment- rp6: stretching a spring
    • stand up so you can move out of the way to avoid clamp falling on feet
    • wear safety goggles as spring could break and damage eye
