Orbital Motion

• Gravity provides the force that allows planets and satellites (both natural and artificial) to maintain their circular orbits
• If the speed of a satellite increases the the radius of the orbit decreases because a greater force of gravity is needed to prevent it from flying into space
• If the speed of a satellite decreases the radius of its orbit increases
