11 - Allah

• Tawhid - Oneness -

  • Islam is a monotheistic faith as it teaches that there is only one God
  • Allah is not a name, it simply means 'the one God'
  • Tawhid is the oneness of God and is the single most important belief in Islam
  • Muslims accept that their God is the same as that of Christians and Jews
  • They reject the Christian Trinity and the belief that Jesus is the Son of as Allah has no children
• Qualities of Allah -

  Muslims believe that Allah is:

  • Creator - He is the cause of everything that exists
  • Immanent - Always close by as the Qur'an says Allah is closer to each of us than the veins in our necks
  • Transcendent - Beyond all things, not limited by rules of nature
  • Omniscient - He has all knowledge; nothing can be hidden from him
  • Omnipotent - He has unlimited power
  • Beneficent - Always kind as he loves us
  • Merciful - Always fair as he forgives us as we are sorry
  • Judge - On the last day, Allah will be our judge
• 99 Beautiful Names of Allah -

  • The Qur'an has 99 different names for Allah which are qualities of Allah
  • Muslims recite the 99 names of Allah on a daily basis
  • They use a string of 99 prayer beads (subha) to help focus on the names
  • Muslims find comfort in Allah's names as they show what he can do
  • Qualities include kind, forgiving, all-powerful, merciful
