Obese people have a much higher risk of developing health problems including increased risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, joint and mobility problems, stroke and some forms of cancer.
People who are obese often experience shortness of breath when walking or doing physical activity and may have low self-esteem and depression
A BMI of 25 to 29.9 means you are overweight. A BMI of 30 to 39.9 means you are obese. A BMI of 40 and above means you are severely obese.
Those who are obese should:
cut down on fatty and sugary foods that provide energy but little nutrients (for example, cakes, biscuits, crisps, sweet fizzy drinks)
eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and fibre-rich foods to fill up (for example, wholegrain cereals, wholemeal bread, brown rice and pasta)
grill, steam and bake food with little added fat instead of frying
use lower-fat versions of foods, such as cheese, milk, spreads and sauces
check the labels on food to make sure they have no added sugars, or use reduced-sugar versions of foods
increase physical activities - walk up stairs instead of using a lift; go swimming or to the gym
