  • ''A man has to make his won way, has to look after himself-and his family''- CAPITALISM vs. SOCIALISM, SOCIAL INEQUALITY

    CAPITALISM: The ideology of private ownerships, paving your own way, every man for himself. ''and his family'' shows how family comes as an afterthought which shows there is a strong insignificance towards family. The repetition of ''his'' shows the capitalistic' idea of men being the breadwinners and head of the family and how females were to be submissive towards their husbands.
  • ''unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable''
    This is dramatic irony as Mr. Birling speaks from a 1912 perspective but readers know the Titanic did sink during that year. Mr Birling is ridiculed and satirized by Priestley. This further connotes the the instability in his rose tinted perspective and how he is out of touch with society.
  • TITANIC
    The Titanic was a capitalistic boat that the proletariat were made to work on while the wealthy/bourgeoisie could afford to see the boat in it's luxury. Mr. Birling further intensifies that not only can the ship not sink, but neither can capitalistic ideas. Readers see otherwise
