To autumn

Cards (9)

  • Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness - strophe
Alliteration - depicting the natural abundance of the season
  • Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun - strophe
This implies that nature and humans are interlinked. This use of noun 'blossom-friend already implies they are very close however this is exaggerated by the use of the adjective 'close'. This relation with friend of the sun implies theres a connection between humans and nature. This personification used to describe the sunrise is also effective as it shows the sun being human like and vice versa.

To Autumn: The personification of the sun as a "friend" alludes to nature being a caring feature of the environment. As well as that the "maturing sun"; the verb "maturing" suggest that the sun is ageing, growing up and changing. However also, the sun becoming more fruitful and ripening over time. This helps to suggest that time is progressive and a positive thing.
  • Conspiring with him how to load and bless - strophe
A harmonisation of the sun and the season of autumn itself - the verbs shows the harvest but also brings almost religious connotations, suggesting something almost holy - romantics
  • Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind - antistrophe
Autumn is a woman- seasons were traditionally personified as female in European art
The word "winnowing" is perfect here because "to winnow" in farm-speak means to separate the grain (the edible part of the plant) from the chaff (its inedible covering). In centuries past, farmers winnowed their crops by having people beat the harvested plant with, say, large sticks. This action loosens the heavier grain, and then the chaff is light enough that it can be blown away, or "winnowed," in the wind.
The place where the grain and the chaff are separated is called the "threshing floor" - this is where autumn is
Imagery of the foliage movements, shows life and movements
  • And gathering swallows twitter in the skies - epode
This final line of the poem creates a sense of time moving on, much like the swallows do, and marks the shift in season towards Winter.
The word 'twitter' emphasises that the natural world is still lively even with this change.
Instead of seeming like an act of abandonment, the fact that the swallows 'gather' together to move suggests this is simply a natural part of the cycle of life and it is time for change.
  • Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies - epode
