  • Lea and Young suggest that we need to understand the inter-relationships between four factors when considering crime:
    • offenders
    • victims
    • social structural factors and formal social control (judges)
    • public and informal social control (community)
  • The State : government, police and courts ensure society runs as smoothly as possible.
    • the public influences the areas of concern the state should improve.
    • the offender influences the areas where support is needed sa the state can provide it.
    • the victim influences the attitudes we have towards crime.

    • The state influences whats legal and what isn't in everyday ife/should make them feel safe.
    • The victims influence care programs /support programs and that some crime is sensitive.
    • The offenders influence the perspective of crime negatively to discourage them from offending.
  • The victims of crime
    • The state influences whether they report it or not, the victims need to trust the statet see that the state trusts them.
    • The public influences how they'll heal from it, they need to show sympathy. They need to make the victims feel safe.
    • The offenders influence the victims mindset and health, negatively.
  • The offenders
    • The state can influence the offenders to commit crime eg. strain theory.
    • The public can influence the offenders to commit crime eg. marginalisation
    • The victim influences their future eg. in court.
