Role of MSPs in Parliament

Cards (5)

  • There are many ways that MSPs can work in parliament
  • Way MSPs work in parliament: Debate
Debates take place in the Debating Chamber of the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays and are an opportunity for MSPs to represent our views. They can challenge or suggest changes to legislation.
  • Way MSPs work in parliament: Propose new laws
MSPs can introduce a Bill proposal to be debated by the Parliament. Bills are draft laws that can be introduced by any MSP.
  • Way MSPs work in parliament: Voting
MSPs take part in voting. This is when they must vote 'for' or 'against' new laws that have been proposed or amendments to current laws. You can look up how your MSP voted on certain issues by going on the Scottish Parliament website. This allows the MSP to be held accountable for their vote.
  • Way MSPs work in parliament: Attend First Ministers Questions (FMQs)

MSPs have the opportunity to question the First Minister at First Ministers Question Time (FMQ). FMQs gives MSPs the opportunity to hold the FM and government to account and get a direct and instant answer to their questions.
