  • Many offenders may not be placed in a prison nearby and therefore it may cost the family quite a bit of money to go and visit the family member in prison

  • The family are experiencing sadness, upset or anger due to either the loss of a family member who has died due to crime or a family member who is a perpetrator of crime

  • The person has faced a custodial sentence and have been sent to prison, having their freedom taken away from them
  • People who have committed a major crime could be in prison for long time which could lead to greater isolation, mental health problems and addiction to drugs available in prison

    Lack of employment
  • If a person has committed a crime, this will be on their criminal record. This has to be declared when you are applying for jobs and although most jobs can't discriminate against people who have been in prison, it doesn't necessarily mean they will hire them
  • This means that people with a criminal record may struggle to find a job and potentially may end up turning back to crime as they struggle to afford things
