Federal Republic of Germany and German Democratic Republic

• 1. 23 May 1949: the USA, Britain and France brought their zones together as a single state
• 2. 14 August 1949: a new parliament was elected, called the Bundestag
• 3. 15 September 1949: the new Chancellor, Adenauer, took office
• 4. October 1949: The German Democratic Republic was created
• Consequently, it became clear that the division of Germany was now permanent
• Consequently, neither German state officially recognised the other, leading to tension
• Consequently, there became later tension over Germany, including at the Paris Summit and over the Berlin Wall
