single and double blind procedure

Cards (2)

  • A single blind procedure is where the researcher is aware that the test is being conducted, say if it is an investigation of a new drug that has been developed to treat a disease. Then the researcher would know which participants are getting the placebo and which one is actually getting the actual drug.  The participants will not know until it has been fully conducted to help control the confounding variables and reduce the demand characteristics so the researcher does not get any fake results or the results that they want.
  •  double blind procedure neither the researcher or the participants are aware of the aims of the experiment being conducted. Going with the example used above neither the researcher or the participants would know who is receiving the real or placebo drug, this means that the participants behaviour is unable to influence the aim of the experiment or the results.
