self report technique questionnaire

Cards (4)

  • Open questions: They do not have a fixed range of answers and allow the respondent to elaborate.
    Strengths:
Having many responses that can be different shows a wide perspective, has depth and detail.
    Weaknesses:
The responses can be difficult to analyse.
  • Closed questions: Have fixed responses like ‘yes and no’ or it could be done by rating on a scale of 1 to 5.
    Strengths:
    Easy to analyse.
    Weaknesses:
    Can lack depth and detail.
  • Strengths of the use of Questionnaires overall:
They are cost effective, data can be collected quickly, and done without the researcher being there for it to be completed., which reduces the effort required for it to be completed. They are also straightforward to analyse mainly closed questions and the results of this produce statistical data which can be recorded in a graph or chart.
  • Limitations of the use of Questionnaires overall:
They may not always be truthful, as the respondent may want to spread a positive light on themselves for social desirability. They can often produce biassed responses as they can repeatedly choose yes. Also they can do the questionnaire really quickly without a thought making the results not valid due to acquiesce bias.
