The soul is called the 'anima' because it animates the body. The soul is independent of the body, and it contains individual identity for each person. The soul is indivisible so therefore is immortal
The New Testament generally speaks of the 'Body and Soul', yet it is widely agreed that this is not how the writers of the Bible understood these ideas.
