  • Free will

    The ability to make decisions and choose between right and wrong
  • Free will enables human beings to choose to disobey God
    What the church calls sin, and leads to much of the suffering in the world

    The idea that humans are born with a natural tendency to sin and therefore all humans are in need of forgiveness

    Creates a barrier between human beings and God, damages or destroys the relationship between them

    The idea that through the life of Jesus, humans can be saved from their sin and the consequences of their sin

    Jesus descended into hell, confronted Satan and took away the keys of hell, releasing all those who had previously died

    • Proved that Jesus was truly the Incarnate Word of God, the second person of the Trinity
    • Conquered the power of sin and death
    • Restored the harmony of creation which had been destroyed by human sin
  • Jesus's ascension
    1. Jesus returned to the Father in heaven
    2. Gives Christians hope that they too will join Jesus one day in heaven
  • Pentecost
    1. The Apostles received the gift of the Holy Spirit and began their mission of preaching the gospel
    2. The birthday of the church as this was the first time the good news of Jesus was preached publicly and many people heard this, repented and were baptized

    Readings are said from here and Jesus is present when the Word is read

    Bread and wine are consecrated and Jesus is made present

    A focal point for prayer and a reminder of what Jesus did

    God created everything to be good → he gave humans free will we have the potential to sin and do sin humans and God are separated → God sent Jesus to restore things

    Jesus' willingness to be totally obedient and sacrifice himself helped fix things

    Jesus' resurrection meant sin and death no longer had power, we can go to heaven

    Jesus' death means there's no longer a barrier between God and humans

    We don't need to fear death or suffering because heaven is waiting

    Past: Jesus died and rose again, this act saved us. Present: We still need the Holy Spirit - we still sin, we still need forgiveness, we still need saving. Future: The final victory will be when God's Kingdom is on earth. Salvation isn't done until the end of time
