Permanent and Induced Magnets

Cards (4)

  • What are the two ends of a bar magnet called?
North and South poles. The magnetic forces are strongest at the poles of a magnet.
  • What happens when we bring two magnets close together?
They exert a force on one another. Two like poles repel each other (force of repulsion). Two unlike poles attract each other (force of attraction). These are non-contact forces.
  • What does a permanent magnet do?
Produces its own magnetic field, for example, a bar magnet. If we bring a permanent magnet close to another one then they can attract or repel each other depending on the direction.
  • What does an induced magnet do?
It becomes a magnet when it is placed in a magnetic field. Induced magnetism always caused a force of attraction. If the magnetic field is lost the induced magnets lose their magnetism quickly.
