      Last resort, extremely shameful and embarrassing, conditions incredibly difficult as families were split up and people had to do hard manual jobs to earn their keep

      Might have penny policies or benefits through trade union membership
    • Friendly societies
      Allowed the working class to pay contributions either weekly or monthly in order to save for a time of ill health or unemployment
    • Relatives
      Used as a means of support, elderly parents might move in with their children or family members might provide food for each other
