  • freud described our mind as being like an iceberg, with the conscious Mind being the tip, the pre-conscious being just below the surface and the unconscious being deep below the water
  • The unconscious mind 

    • cannot be directly accessed
    • ruled by pleasure seeking (id)
    • believed to determine much of our behaviour, we are motivated by unconscious emotional drives
    • it expresses itself indirectly, like through dreams and appears through symbols
  • The unconscious mind is also related to defence mechanisms, conflicts between the id, ego and superego Create anxiety. Therefore the ego protects itself utilising defence Mechanisms
  • Defence mechanism
    • repression - unacceptable feelings pushed down into the unconscious mind
    • displacement - putting emotions onto someone else - bullied becomes the bully
    • regression - responding to anxiety in childish ways
    • sublimination
    • denial - refusing to accept and go through emotions that provoke unpleasant feeling
    • projection - peoples own faults are attributed to someone else
