Jewish Immigration

• Many people also came from Russia but they were mainly Jews
• They were fleeing poverty and pogroms in their native lands
• This was an organized massacre of the Jews and therefore many decided to immigrate to Scotland as they saw it as a safer place to live
• Jews also came from Germany to escape the Nazis
• Through propaganda Hitler had created a wide hatred for the Jews and therefore, many were being targeted for violent attacks regularly
• Many of the Jews who immigrated to Scotland settled in the Gorbals area of Glasgow
• This was due to their lack of income when they first arrived and a large Jewish community was built up here
• Once they became wealthier the Jews moved into more affluent areas of Glasgow such as Pollokshields
