    • Many Irish immigrants Because of their poverty and poor state of health settled around the west coast of Scotland as they did not have the money to travel around Scotland
    • Many Irish moved to Dundee to work in the Jute industry
    • Irish settled in rural parts of Scotland for seasonal farm work
    • Many Irish moved to Glasgow due to the attraction of work in heavy industries such as shipbuilding
    • Italians initially established themselves in areas of Glasgow, for example Partick but Italian communities were also established in Edinburgh
    • Lithuanians settled in the west of Scotland, particularly where coal mines were situated and therefore there was a significant Lithuanian community in Coatbridge
    • Scottish industry benefited from the empire such as shipbuilding along the Clyde with famous firms, such as Napier's, John Brown's and Fairfield's
