Ts & Cs

    Cards (3)

    • The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty
ABMs were allowed only at two sites in each country and they should have a maximum of 100 missiles each.
    • The Interim Treaty
This restricted the number of ICBMs and Submarine launched BMs that each country could have:
      • USA: 1054 ICBMS and 740 SLBMs
      • Soviet Union: 1618 ICBMs and 740 SLBMs
The Soviet Union was allowed more ICBMs because the USA had more strategic bombers.
It had also developed MIRVs (Multiple Independently targetable Re-entry Vehicles) - did not want to mention this to Soviet Union and therefore were happy to make more generous concessions.
    • Basic Principles Agreement
Rules for conduct of nuclear warfare (e.g. banning the placement of warheads on the seabed)
Set out steps for avoiding nuclear war
Countries agreed to take care of their relations and exercise restraint to make every effort to avoid the risk of nuclear war.
