Cards (6)

  • What is a monocotyledonous seed?
Seeds that have an endosperm- food is separate from the embryo
    • example- corn seed
  • What is a dicotyledonous seed?
    A seed without an endosperm
    • example- bean seeds
  • What is the endosperm in seeds?
An area where food (starch) is stored. This is found in monocytoledonous seeds and is separated from the embryo.
  • What happens during germination?
Seed absorbs water through a pore in the testa. This triggers metabolic changes in the seed so enzymes are secreted
  • What happens during germination (enzymes)?
    Metabolic changes occur.
    • amylase and maltase break down starch to glucose.
    • glucose is turned to sucrose for transport.
    • protease breaks down proteins.
    • lipase breaks down lipids.
  • Factor that should be controlled in a seed experiment.
    • plants that are genetically similar
    • REPEAT and calculate mean
    • have a CONTROL for comparison
    • control environmental factors ie temperature, light intensity
    • control soil factors ie pH
