  • The nature of God
    Christians believe God is one but exists in three different parts: The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • Creation
    • Day 1 = created heaven and hell
    • Day 2 = separated water from sky and made day and night
    • Day 3 = he made vegetation
    • Day 4 = made the sun, the stars and the moon
    • Day 5 = made sea life and birds
    • Day 6 = made man and woman
    • Day 7 = rested
  • Afterlife
    • Immortality of the soul = the belief the soul lives on after the death of the body
    • Resurrection = the belief that the body comes back to life and is reunited with your soul
    • Purgatory = Roman Catholic Christians believe that only perfect people go to heaven. Others get sent to an in-between world were they prepare for heaven
    • Parable of the sheep and the goat = the biblical story that explains the idea of judgment.
    • sheep = giving
    • goats = selfish
  • The person of Jesus
    • Jesus' mother was a virgin who was told by an angel she would fall pregnant with the son of God. The angle said 'The holy spirit will come upon you and the power of the highest will over shadow you'.
    • He is the incarnation of God 'in the flesh'
  • Crucifixion of Jesus
    • Jesus was crucified for saying he was the son of God as people called it blasphemy.
    • They made him carry a sign on his cross saying 'Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews' to mock him.
    • Its said that he bled blood and water.
    • His last words were 'it is finished' showing he completed his duty of mending the relationship between God and humans.
    • He also said 'forgive them father, they don't know what they are doing'.
  • Resurrection of Jesus
    • His tomb was found open and empty and two men appeared to say 'he has risen'.
    • Jesus visited his disciples.
    • His resurrection is important because it creates hope that there is an afterlife and shows God is omnipotent.
  • Ascension of Jesus
    • When asked questions, Jesus said its not for them to know showing God is omniscient.
    • He told his disciples to 'make disciples of all nations' - spread the word of God.
  • Worship
    • Worship = a way to show respect
    • Liturgical = follows the same pattern each time
    • Non-Liturgical = no set order
    • Private Worship = informal and often takes place at home
  • Prayer
    • A way to communicate and worship someone, can be done silently or through words of praise and for asking for forgiveness.
    • Set prayer = Liturgical, lords prayer, formal.
    • Informal prayer = non-liturgical, personal.
  • Sacraments
    • Sacraments = holy rituals that are expressed in spiritual experiences.
    • They include marriage, baptism and holy communion.
    • Protestants believe in 2, Catholics believe in 7.
  • Adult Baptism
    • Takes place as an adult.
    • Full body submerged.
    • Wash away sin and welcome into religion.
  • Infant Baptism
    • Takes place as a baby (no choice).
    • Holy water poured on head.
    • Wash away original sin and welcome into religion.
  • The Eucharist
    • Also known as holy communion.
    • It is a sacrament that commemorates the last supper.
    • They eat bread and wine which symbolises Jesus' body and blood.
    • Orthodox Christians believe Jesus is mystically present and the bread and wine is the actual flesh and blood of him.
    • Others believe its only symbolic.
  • Pilgrimage - Lords
    • Takes place in France.
    • Bernadette saw a vision of a lady on a rock.
    • The lady asked her to visit for 17 days.
    • On the 17th day the lady revealed she was the virgin Mary.
    • The lady told her to build a chapel.
    • Water went from muddy to clear (miracle)
    • It is believed that the water can heal the sick.
  • Pilgrimage - Iona
    • Takes place in Scotland.
    • Some think Iona is a 'thin place' where the veil between the spiritual world and physical world is thin.
    • They walk 7 miles to the islands holy and historical spots to conduct workshops.
  • Persecution
    • Persecution = hostility and ill treatment, especially because of race, political opinion or religious beliefs.
    • 'love thy neighbour'
    • 'treat others how you'd like to be treated'
    • 'do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good'
  • Evangelism
    • Evangelism = public preaching.
    • The Great Commission = before Jesus ascended to heaven, he told his disciples to 'go make disciples of all nations'.
  • The Ten Commandments
    • You shall have no other God before me
    • You shall make no idols
    • You shall not say the lords name in vain
    • Keep the sabbath day holy
    • Honour your mother and father
    • Thou shall not kill
    • Thou shall not commit adultery
    • Thou shall not steal
    • Thou shall not lie
    • Thou shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbour'
