    Psychology is a branch of broader discipline of philosophy. If psychology has has a definition during this time, it is best understood as experimental psychology. In the 1800s, Charles Darwin developed his Evolutionary Theory of Survival of the Fittest.

    Wundt opened the first experimental psychology lab in Germany, and Psychology emerged as a distinct discipline in its own right. This distinctly scientific approach established a clear shift from philosophy.
  • Psychology's timeline: 1900s- Sigmund Freud(NOT SCIENTIFIC)
    Freud published 'The Interpretation of Dreams' and established the psychodynamic approach. He emphasises the influence of the unconscious mind on behaviour and developed his person-centred therapy; psychoanalysis. He argued that physical problems could be explained in terms of conflicts with the mind.

    Watson writes 'Psychology as the Behaviourist views it', and with Skinner's later contributions establishes the behaviourist approach. The psychodynamic and behaviourist (producing objective, empirical evidence) approaches dominate psychology for the next 50 years.

    Rogers and Maslow develop the humanistic approach; the '3rd-force' in psychology rejecting the views favoured by behaviourism and the psychodynamic approach that human behaviour was not determined by the individual Humanistic psychologists emphasise the importance of self-determination and free will.

    The cognitive revolution came with the introduction of the 'digital computer'. This gave psychologists a metaphor for the operations of the human mind. The cognitive approach reintroduces using experimental methods to study mental processes in psychology. Around the time of the cognitive revolution, Bandura proposed the social learning theory. This approach draws attention to the role of cognitive factors in learning, such as learning through the perception of others.

    The biological approach begins to establishes itself as the dominant scientific perspective in psychology. This is due to advances in technology that led to increased understanding of the brain and biological processes.
