  • Abbreviations: Can either be standard (pm) or invented.
  • Acronym: Initial letters of a phrase that are pronounced as a word (lol)
  • Affixation: The addition of a suffix or prefix to a word to change its meaning
  • Blending: Putting two words together to make a new word
  • Borrowing: Taking words from other languages
  • Clipping: Creating a new word by dropping a syllable or two from a pre-existing word
  • Coinage: Creation of new words that are completely made up
  • Colloquialism: Slang
  • Compounding: Two words put together to make a new word
  • Contraction: Missing letters
  • Conversion: Changing a word class (Netflixing)
  • Deletion: Deleting double letters
  • Deviant spellings: Abbreviating words to accentuate words or convey phonology
  • Emoticons: Pictures made from punctuation to convey tone
  • Initialism: Phrase represented by the first letters but you don't say it like a word (btw)
  • Letter and Number Homophones: A number or letter that stands in for part of a word because it sounds the same (2 = too/to)
  • Logogram: Graphic units are associated with words or actions (x = kiss)
  • Mixed-Mode: Increased use of colloquialisms or non-standard grammar.
  • Neologism: Newly created word or expression
  • Vowel Deletions: Vowels missed out to save space (alwys = always)
