• Children used to be economic assets to their parents however due to changing laws they have become economic liabilities
• Reasons for children becoming economic liabilities:

  1. laws (compulsory education etc)
  2. changing norms (rising child centredness)
  3. cost of raising children have increased in real terms
• The cost of bringing up a child has risen by 20% since the 1980's
