    • HUAC means
      The House Un-American Activities Committee
    • The HUAC was founded in 1938 to find Nazi sympathizers in government. After WWII, HUAC switched to the communist threat
    • SPSI means
      The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations
    • The SPSI held hearings on communist influence in US society
    • The FBI investigated security risks in the U.S. and participated in creating a climate of fear with the creation of propagandistic films
    • In 1947, under pressure, Truman signed a "loyalty order" establishing loyalty reviews for federal employees
    • Two espionage cases caused an anticommunist frenzy : 

      • 1948 Alger Hiss
      • 1951-1953 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
    • In 1948, Alger Hiss, a member of the State Department, was accused of being part of the secret "communist underground" in Washington D.C. without substancial evidence
    • In 1951-1953 : Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (two members of the American Communist Party in the 1930s) were indicted and executed for passing secret bomb-related documents to the Soviets
