In flowering plants, the vast majority of water is transported through hollow, thick-walled tubes called xylem vessels
The main force that pulls water through the xylem vessels in the stem of a plant is the evaporation of water from leaves - a process called transpiration
Transpiration - The process where plants absorb water through the roots, which then moves up through the plant and is released into the atmosphere as water vapour through pores in the leaves
The energy for transpiration is supplied by the sun and the process is therefore passive
