  • Use a 9 foot or 12 foot van for your F class testing
  • Do an inspection of the rented vehicle prior to driving it to the drive test. A daily inspection report has to be filled out beforehand and can be presented to the examiner
  • The tests work by making you do the entire thing, then 2 interior and 4 exterior inspections are randomly chosen for you to do(you should've already done these)
  • You should know items 1, 2 and 3 from the schedule
  • Class F entitles you to drive a small bus so you may need to know some knowledge on that
  • Say these things if defects are found : For major defects, you must report it in the daily inspection report and notify supervisor or the owner of the vehicle. The vehicle is deemed not drivable and no one can operate it
  • Say these things if defects are found : For minor defects, you must report it in the daily inspection report and notify supervisor or the owner of the vehicle. The vehicle is deemed drivable and the driver can operate it
  • Minor defects are in column 1 while major are in column 2
  • Start inspection with the driver's door; examine it for damage and ensure it closes/opens. A minor defect is if the the door latch fails and it doesn't close securely and a major defect is if it fails to function as intended. Make sure you step in and out through the door to demonstrate their function
  • A school busses rear door is an emergency door and alarm may go off once you step into one.
  • Examiners will ask you about stanchions(things to hold onto while standing on the bus) and safety equipment inside the bus(rubber stoppers before exits and whatnot). Ensure stanchions aren't loose and safety equipment isn't damaged
  • To do an inspection of the exhaust system, vehicle must be idling. Start by popping the hood and saying I don't smell any exhaust or gas. Also look underneath the vehicle and make sure you don't see any loose parts or damage. Make sure to go back to the tailpipe and repeat those statements. Minor defect is an exhaust leak and major defect is the smell of exhaust coming from the vehicle
  • To do check the body and frame, open the hood and ensure you know how to prop it up properly. Look for damage, cracks and shifting at the engine compartment, underneath the front of it and to the side of it. Step back and look at the entire vehicle saying: body looks secure. I don't see any damage to the body of the vehicle and everything looks secure. Grab a piece of the bumper and shake it a bit. The minor defects are missing parts and major are like visibly shifted parts and big cracks(Usually old and rusted cars)
  • For the engine: ensure you know where the break fluid goes, where the windshield washer fluid goes and where the oil goes.
  • To inspect fuel system: ensure gas cap is tight and you hear 2 clicks. Look underneath gas cap to the tank and say I don't say any damage, it is secure to the vehicle and there's no leaks. Major defects are: missing cap, loose tank or fuel leak
  • To examine windshield and windows say: I don't see any cracks to the window and I can see through the window so there's full visibility. Do this on the driver's side first, windshield and then passenger's side. Ensure mirrors are attached and shake them a little and say there's no damage. Minor defect is that mirror/window fails to give full range of view bcuz of damage. Major defect is that the windshield cannot be cleared by the wipers.
  • To inspect hydraulic breaking system: pop the hood, know where break fluid reservoir is located, make sure the reservoir is greater than a quarter . Check for leaks at the engine and the ground. With the vehicle off, pump the brake 3 to 4 times until the brakes are hard; hold your foot on the brake and start the car which should release the pressure and drop the brake. Once the car is on, state that the brake system warning light is not on. Minor defect is if brake fluid below minimum level and major is if brake fluid is leaking or brake test fails.
  • To inspect the front suspension system, turn the driver side wheel out. Look for the coil springs, look for loose, missing and broken items.
  • To check the suspension system for the rear: check for the leaf springs. Just confirm that they're secure and there's no damage or cracks. 1 broken leaf spring is minor, while a major is 2
  • These are leaf springs
  • For air operated suspension systems, a minor defect is a leak while a major is a damaged/ cracked air bag
  • Check the tires for damage of the sidewall and objects sticking out or exposed cord. "There's no leaks from the tires I can hear". Kick the tire with your toe to ensure pressure is good. The thread of the tire is greater than 3 mm thick for the front and the 1.5 mm thick for the back tire. Minor defect is damage to thread, sidewall and tire. Major is leaking and flat tire
  • To inspect the wheel hub: by hand tighten each lug nut and make sure they are secure. Make sure there's no damaged and ensure you see secure upper and lower control arms.
  • To inspect the hub oil(ambulances don't have them): you will find a plastic/glass sight window in the middle of the wheel. Say "i'm looking at the hub oil, I'm seeing it through the sight glass and there's no leaks". Minor is the oil is less than minimum while major is tire is loose or bearing failure
  • For your interior inspection, make sure the vehicle is running. Start with the seat and adjusting it and ensuring its secure. Ask the examiner to test the passenger seat as well. Ensure there's nothing on the floor that interferes with break and accelerator. Check the seat belt for rips and tears and that it locks into place. Minor is that seat is damaged while major is the seat cannot be locked and seatbelt doesn't get lockked
  • For your steering wheel inspection: make sure you can honk, grab at 10 and 2, turn it back and forth; I have no excessive free play or lashing of the steering wheel. Confirm that tires are turning with ur wheel as well. Minor is windshield wiper malfunction, major is wiper fails to operate and there's not enough fluid squirted and steering wheel is insecure/nonresponsiveness
  • When turning on the car, verbalize that all the warning lights came on and then went out. Say speedometer is at 0, idling is normal, temperature is at normal and gas is at whatever. Say the seatbelt light is on if its on.
  • Make sure windshield wipers work on all speeds and spray on each of them
  • For interior, check: gauges, lights and indicators. Make sure heaters and defrosters are fully functional. For emergencies ensure there are cones/pylons/triangles, fire extinguisher and first air kit.
  • For reversing the vehicle, you must honk before each and every reversing maneuver.
