The formation of the Warsaw Pact

• West Germany joining NATO in May 1955 led the USSR to fear an armed and powerful Germany on the border of Eastern Europe
• Within a week of the formation of NATO, the USSR had formed their own defensive alliance
• The members of the Warsaw Pact were the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania and East Germany
