CPU Performance

Cards (4)

  • What does CPU performance rely on
clock speed, number of cores and cache size
  • Clock Speed
Number of instructions a single processor core can carry out per second (Hz)
most desktop computers will have around 3.5GHz (3.5billion instructions per second)
Higher the clock speed, the greater the number of instructions carried out per second
Some CPUs can be overclocked, making them run at a higher clock speed than the factory-set rate
can make CPUs overheat, causing crashes or permanent damage
  • Number of Cores
Each core in CPU can process data independently
The more cores a CPU has, the more instructions it can carry out at once, so it can process a batch of data faster
  • Cache Size
Cache is data storage inside CPU thats much faster than RAM
Larger CPU cache gives CPU faster access to more data it needs to process
