  • One feature of democracy in Scotland is that all people have the right to vote. People can express their views by voting for a party, person or issue in an election or referendum. For example, millions of people voted back in the Scottish Parliament elections which the SNP won in 2021.
  • Another feature of democracy in Scotland is that every person has the right to free speech. Anyone has the freedom to express their opinion in whatever way they like with the exception of violence, hate speech and damaging lies. For example, certain songs cannot be sung at football games because they discriminate against certain religions.
  • A final feature of democracy in Scotland is that all citizens have the right to protest. People in Scotland are allowed to gather in large groups to protest about anything that is important to them but they must inform the police and follow all the laws. For example, back in 2020 people gathered to protest against Donald Trump visiting Scotland.
