  • Consequences of WW1 for Germany
    Debts increased from 50 billion marks to 150 billion
    11 million German fought in the war, 2 million died and 4 million were injured
    Over 750,000 germans died from food shortages
    Workers and soldiers were rioting (people setting up own local councils)
  • German revolution 1918-1919
    9 November 1918 - kaiser's ministers advise him to give up his position to restore order. he lost support from the german army and abdicated along with exiling to holland.
    streets of berlin were full of people, some gathered peacefully by the reichstag whilst others collected guns and took over parts of the city . Kaiser's chancellor handed over his office to Friedrich Ebert (leader of SPD)
  • German revolution 1918-1919
    10th November - Ebert made an agreement with general Groener for the army to work with the government to keep the communists out of power. Ebert suspended the old Reichstag and named 6 moderate politicians who would form the council of people's representatives. This council would head the government of the country, but only until a new constitution could be agreed
    11th November - Eberts representatitive signed the armistice. This was the formal agreement between Germany and the allies to end WW1. This was the first major decision of the government

    germany's colonies to be given to the league of nations
    Germany must pay reparations
    Germany must accept full blame
