    1. Aim is to release repressed emotions and experiences, ie make the unconscious conscious by relaxing the mind and bringing the repressed thoughts to the conscious so that those problems can be dealt with properly and the person can be "cured"
    2. Psychoanalysts believe this is a good intervention tactic when it comes to a child who has experienced trauma - this method could potentially prevent criminality from occurring later in life
    3. Psychoanalysis is a lengthy process often involving 2 to 5 sessions per week for several years
  • One weakness of psychoanalysis is that it is not ethical to ask people to relive traumatic and upsetting experiences
  • Another weakness is that psychoanalysis is NOT effective in reducing offending - only 44% of psychoanalysis patients showed improvement in criminality, compared to 72% treated using alternative therapies
