  • Austro-Hungary sent an ultimatum of demands in 48 hours that forced Austria to accept the killing.
  • Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914.
  • Russia mobilizes her forces (to help Serbia).
  • Germany declared war on Russia (to help Austro-Hungary) and France on August 1 and 3, 1914 respectively.
  • To avoid fighting on two fronts (East and West) at a time, the Germans made a war plan called the Schlieffen War Plan.
  • The plan targeted to attack one enemy in the west (France) first, then to turn against Russia in the East.
  • So, Germany sent a large army into Belgium and France, but allied troops were able to manage to stop them.
  • the plan was considered excellent on paper (on theory), but it failed practically.
  • As opposed to the German war plan and expectations, the Russians rapidly mobilized and attacked the Germans.
  • Russia attacked Germany and Austria-Hungary in the East.
  • So the Germans were forced to fight on two fronts.
  • There was no possibility for a rapid victory on either side.
  • The Russian attack forced the Germans to reduce and transfer part of their army into the eastern front.
  • However, the military balance was changed after the USA involved in the war on the side of the allied.
  • Finally, in 1918 the Central powers were defeated. Triple Entente (Allied) got a brilliant victory over the Triple Alliance (Central powers).
