evaluating psychodynamic

Cards (3)

  • LACKS VALIDITY
F's theories = criticised - due - unfalsifiable concepts > focus on topics that can't be objectively tested
lacks internal validity > can't say for certain that regression - due to issues in oral stage that lead to SZ symptoms > as - can't be tested / measured
exp - lacks scientific validity and less respected compared to bio (objective measures)
  • NO USEFUL APPLICATION
    • F - claimed psychoanalysis = not suitable for SZ > bc ppl who experience psychosis lack insight into condition
    • vital - psychoanalysis = for people who are able to consider their U conflicts and repressed childhood trauma > not appropriate + potentially damaging for ppl = lost touch with reality
    • Strupp (1977) - psychoanalytic therapies = more harmful than helpful for SZ > can reinforce delusions
questions validity of exp > because - limited use + can't identify causes
  • CONCLUSION
    • Psychodynamic theories = weak + lack supporting ev > lack val
    • to fully explain complex disorder > need to examine other exp
    • childhood experience may be better placed as possible environmental trigger to biological predisposition
